Petitgrain bigarade oil is obtained from the leaves and twigs of the bitter orange tree through steam distillation, with the leaves serving as the primary raw material. The typical yield is approximately 0.2%.
Paraguay petitgrain oil, also known as South American petitgrain oil, is produced by steam distillation of the leaves and twigs of Citrus aurantium L. varieties that grow semi-wild or are cultivated in Paraguay. The use of superheated steam during distillation helps reduce the hydrolysis of esters that are important to the quality of the aroma.
Both petitgrain bigarade oil and Paraguay petitgrain oil can be further processed by vacuum distillation to produce terpeneless petitgrain oil.

Petitgrain oil is widely used in the pharmaceutical and perfumery industries due to its therapeutic and tonic properties. It has a fresh, invigorating fragrance with slightly floral notes and a characteristic bitter undertone.
Like neroli oil, genuine petitgrain oil, also known as petitgrain bigarade oil, is obtained by distilling the leaves of the bitter orange tree. Other varieties, including petitgrain bergamot, petitgrain lemon, and petitgrain mandarin oils, are also produced. However, petitgrain oil may cause skin irritation in some cases.
