In the food industry, lauric acid can be used for vegetable and fruit peeling applications with a maximum permitted usage level of 3.0 g/kg. It is also utilized as a defoamer and as an ingredient for the preparation of food-grade additives and approved flavoring agents according to GB 2760-86.

As an important component in the surfactant industry, lauric acid can be converted into different types of surfactants, including cationic, anionic, non-ionic, and amphoteric surfactants. Some derivatives of lauric acid and lauryl alcohol also exhibit preservative and antibacterial properties, such as dodecyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride, dodecyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium bromide, and domiphen bromide.
