Polystyrene is an industrial polymer with a purity of ≥99%, appearing as colorless transparent solid particles or granules with no odor. It has a melting point of 240°C and decomposes upon boiling. Its vapor pressure is negligible at 25°C, and its relative density is 1.05 (20°C).
It is insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents such as benzene, toluene, and chloroform. Polystyrene is chemically stable under normal conditions but is incompatible with strong oxidizing agents and certain organic solvents.
