SILICIC ACID CAS#1343-98-2

Silicic acid, also known as metasilicic acid, is a dibasic weak acid that is nearly insoluble in water. It has the chemical formula H₂SiO₃ and a molecular weight of 78.10. The compound appears as a white amorphous powder with low water solubility. Its first ionization equilibrium constant is K₁ = 2 × 10¹⁰ at room temperature.

In nature, silicic acid is commonly found in the form of salts. It is insoluble in hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid, but can dissolve in hydrofluoric acid and alkaline solutions such as potassium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide, producing potassium silicate (K₂SiO₃) or sodium silicate (Na₂SiO₃) along with water.

Silicic acid has a decomposition melting point of approximately 150℃. When heated above this temperature, it decomposes into silicon dioxide and water, with silicon dioxide serving as silicic anhydride. Silicic acid cannot be directly synthesized by the reaction of silicon dioxide with water; instead, it is obtained through the reaction of silicates with acids. Depending on the solution concentration, the resulting silicic acid may appear as a white sol or form a gel precipitate.
