Monoethanolamine (Ethanolamine) is a viscous, hygroscopic amino alcohol containing both amine and hydroxyl functional groups. It is naturally present in the body and serves as a component of lecithin. Due to its unique chemical properties, monoethanolamine has a wide range of industrial applications.

It is commonly used in the production of agricultural chemicals, pharmaceuticals, detergents, and other chemical products. In addition, it can be applied as a surfactant, fluorometric reagent, and an absorbent for the removal of carbon dioxide (CO₂) and hydrogen sulfide (H₂S). Monoethanolamine is widely used as an absorption agent for removing carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide from natural gas and other industrial gases. It is also applied as a leather softening agent and a dispersing agent for agricultural chemicals. In addition, ethanolamine is used in polishes, hair waving formulations, emulsifiers, and the production of surface-active agents. It is approved for use in materials involved in food production, processing, and packaging.

Ethanolamine exhibits the typical chemical reactions of primary amines and alcohols. Two of its important industrial reactions include reacting with carbon dioxide or hydrogen sulfide to form water-soluble salts, and reacting with long-chain fatty acids to produce neutral ethanolamine soaps. These substituted ethanolamine derivatives, such as ethanolamine soaps, are widely used as emulsifiers, thickeners, wetting agents, and detergents in cosmetic products, including skin cleansers, creams, and lotions.
